Colourful Ukadiche Modak (Ganpati Special)

Ukadiche Modak, also known as Steamed Modak is one of the favourite snack of Lord Ganesha. It is offered to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi Puja.

What you'll need:

 For Outer Layer - 

  1. Rice Flour - 1 cup (250 grams)
  2. Water - 1 cup
  3. Ghee - 1 tsp
  4. Salt - ¼ tsp
  5. Food Colours - 3 (As per choice)

 For Stuffing - 

  1. Grated Coconut - 1 cup (250 grams)
  2. Jaggery - ½ cup (125 grams)
  3. Cardamom Powder/Elaichi Powder - ¼ tsp
  4. Ghee - 1 tsp

How to make?

  • Firstly, for outer layer, boil water with salt & ghee in it. 
  • Now, add Rice Flour, mix well, cover it with a lid & cook it on a low flame for 2 minutes.
  • Now, turn off the flame & let it rest for 10 minutes. 
  • Now, for stuffing, in a pan, add Ghee, Grated Coconut & Jaggery, cook on low flame till Jaggery melts. At this stage, add Cardamom/Elaichi Powder & let it cool completely.
  • Now, take out the outer layer mixture prepared above in a bowl & kneed a soft dough out of it (Tip: If the dough is too hard, sprinkle some water to make it softer. If the dough is too soft, add some Rice Flour to make it proper) 
  • Now, in a steamer, add Water & bring it to a boil (on medium flame).
  • Now, take 1/3 of outer layer dough, divide it into 3 equal parts & add 3 different Food Colours of your choice in the 3 parts.
  • Now, spread white outer layer portion on the walls of the Modak mould & 3 coloured outer layer portions on the top of the Modak mould (As shown in the picture).
  • Now, close the Modak mould, add stuffing in between & seal it with white outer layer portion carefully so that the stuffing doesn't come out.
  • Now, carefully open the Modak mould & take it out. Similarly, prepare all other Modaks.
  • Now, Modaks are ready to be steamed.
  • Now, steam all the Modaks in a steamer for 10 minutes or till the shiny texture appears on them.
  • Finally, your Modaks are ready to be offered to Lord Ganesha.
